Brownstone Trail

The Brownstone trail follows the old railroad grade along Lake Superior from the City of Bayfield to Port Superior. At one time, that railroad carried passengers from Chicago to Bayfield, WI.

After the railroad abandoned the entire corridor in the mid-seventies, parts of the railroad grade were lost through new development. This short stretch has been open for the public to use as a walking trail due to the generosity of the neighboring landowners. The Bayfield Regional Conservancy is meeting with neighbors to formalize the use of the trail as a footpath. The trail is open for walking, biking, skiing and snowshoeing.
