I’m a 54-year old lawyer in private practice. I currently have a law office in Eau Claire, WI, and a home office in Hayward, WI, where I do much of my legal work. I was born in Washington, D.C. I moved to Duluth, MN as a child and I finished high school there. I received a BS in natural resources management from UW-Stevens Point in 1980, a MS in Urban & Regional Planning from UW Madison in 1984, and a JD from UW Law School in 1994. I worked for over ten years in various positions with state and county government and nonprofit organizations before attending UW Law School from 1992-94. I have practiced law since early 1995, with an emphasis on civil rights and environmental law. From 1995-2005, I practiced law in Madison where I was a shareholder in the law firm of Garvey & Stoddard, S.C. In 2005, I moved to Eau Claire where I established my own solo practice. In early 2011, I moved to Hayward.
I currently live near Hayward with my wife, Molly Otis, on Upper Twin Lake. Molly Otis has lived in the Hayward area for many years and is a well-known musician and business owner. She attended high school in Ashland, WI, and her mother, Laurie Otis, lives near Washburn, WI. I have two children from a previous marriage, Patrick Stoddard (18 yrs) and Chloe Stoddard (14 yrs). Molly also has two children from a previous marriage, Cassidy Scheer (31 yrs) and Carly Scheer (26 yrs).
With my three brothers, I own 440 acres of land near Minong, WI, which we call Wolf Springs Forest. The property has been in our family since the late 1930s, when my father acquired it. He built a home there in the 1940s and my brothers and I rebuilt it in the early 1990s. The property has a beautiful stand of large second-growth white and red pine, and numerous springs and ponds which have native brook trout and other species of fish in them.
My family has continuously conserved and managed this property for esthetics, sustainable forestry, fish and wildlife habitat, and recreation. I have a strong personal commitment to conservation and environmental protection.
